AppBridge Documentation : Discover and report - File Shares

AppBridge Surveyor uses Connections to scan and report on critical aspects of your File Share environment. 

Prerequisites

1. Administrator credentials on the File Share Connection

2. Access to the Transformation Suite and selected Transformation Project

Supported File Share Data 

Surveyor supports discovery on the following File Share objects:

Supported DataDescription
Files

Surveyor identifies information about files of any extension type within the scan scope.

Folders

Surveyor identifies all folder hierarchies in the source environment:

  • Folder names and depth
  • Deeply nested folder structures

 

ACL Information

Surveyor identifies information about Permissions in File Shares:

  • User permissions
  • Group permissions
  • Permission inheritance
  • Unique permissions
  • SID permissions

Available Reports

The following reports can be generated for File Share Connections:

Report
Description

Depth Report

Provides a detailed breakdown of a File Share folder hierarchy and content at each level.

File Age Report

Provides a list of each object in the scan scope, including file size, last modified, last accessed information.
File Object TotalsProvides a detailed breakdown of all objects that exist within the File Share, organized by file type and quantity, and total data volume of the connection.
Group Member TotalsThis report enumerates Active Directory groups. (Note that this report requires the Active Directory Add-on.)
Permission CountsProvides a list of every user with permissions within the scope and the total number of permissions each user possesses.
Permissions by ObjectProvides a breakdown of every permission assigned to each object within the connection, including permission inheritance.

Scanning File Share Connections

To open the Scan configuration card for your environment:

  1. Sign into an authorized Transformation Suite administrator account.

  2. Click the Reports link in the pages navigation tabs.

  3. Select the desired File Share Connection and click the Scan button from the Connection Reports toolbar.

Configuration - File Share Scans

The following section details the options available for configuring a Scan after clicking the Scan button from the Connection Reports toolbar.

General Settings

Scan Scope

The Scan Scope is used to directly set the objects that the Scan will crawl. There are two ways to configure the Scan Scope:

  1. Click the explore  icon beside the Connection drop down menu. This will open the Connection Tree View and allow you to choose the start point for the Scan. This method will only allow a single start point for the crawl.

  2. Use Value Lists to upload a crawl scope CSV file. For File Share Scans, the format of the CSV is a single column list of folder paths.
Crawl Rules

Crawl rules are advanced settings that configure how the crawler discovers objects during a crawl. File Share scans currently have the following Crawl Rules:

  1. Standard File Connection Discovery: Crawls all content within the Scan Scope. Standard Discovery has the following sub-settings:

    1. Include Folder Permissions: All permissions assigned at the folder level are included in the crawl. 
       
    2. Include File Permissions: All permissions assigned at the file level are included in the crawl. If file level permissions are inherited from their parent folder, this option can be deselected to greatly increase crawl performance.
       
    3. Include SID Permissions: Deselected by default. This option will include all permissions in the crawl, including those for users or groups whose identities are displayed as SID in the source environment. SID principals can be mapped to target users if the SID principals' identities are known.
Location Crawl List

Location Crawl Lists are a Value List that restrict the scope of the Scan to the locations present in the list.

The following Location Crawl List would scan the Marketing, Sales, and Operations subfolders and their child folders within the Collaboration File Share, excluding all other subfolders:

\\DOMAIN\Collaboration\Sales
\\DOMAIN\Collaboration\Operations
Scan Generator Options*

Configure the Scan generator options to control how many Scans are generated.

Each Scan will execute a single Execute Scan Action when started. Scan Actions will be placed into the Action Queue and executed on any available Transformation Servers.

To execute multiple Scans concurrently, first use the Scan Generator Options to generate multiple Scans, then associate additional Transformation Servers, or increase the Action Limits on individual Transformation Servers.

Scan Partitions

Specifies the number of partitions that a scan scope will be divided into. 

Best Practice: Each scan partition is placed in the scanning queue, and will be assigned to any Transformation Server with available resources. By dividing the scan scope into many smaller partitions across a number of servers, scanning performance can be greatly increased.

Start Scan Immediately

Immediately places a Scan Action into the Action Queue for each Scan after generation is complete.

Generating and executing Scans

Once the configuration has been completed, Scans can be generated by clicking the Save button in the configuration dialog. If the Start Scan Immediately option is selected, Scans will automatically start once the Save button is pressed

Note: Generating Scans may take a few moments. Check the status of the Scan generation by clicking the Action Viewer in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Once generated, Scans can be started at any time by the following steps:

  1. Click the Expand button in the row for the Connection you would like to Scan.

  2. Select the Scans you would like to start.

  3. Click the Start button from the Scans toolbar.

Downloading Reports

Once Scans have been executed, the Reports that were chosen during the Scan configuration phase can be downloaded.

Download All Reports

To download all Reports from a Connection, perform the following steps:

  1. Select the checkbox beside each Connection you would like to download Reports for. 

  2. Click the Download All Reports button on the Connection Reports toolbar.

Download Reports from Individual Scans

To download Reports from an individual Scan, perform the following steps:

  1. Click the Expand+ button on the right hand side of the Connection row containing the Scan that you would like to download Reports for. 

  2. Select the checkbox beside each Scan you would like to download Reports for.
     

  3. Click the Download button on the Scans toolbar
